THE NINH CO RIVER
Where is your native village? Is that the Tra Lu canton?
Is that Phu Nhai, Bac Tinh or Kinh Danh parish?
Don’t you still miss them after fifty years?
That is our ancestors’ land with our lovely villages!
Where is your native village? Is that Trực Ninh
or Hai Hau? Is that Nghia Hung, Giao Thuy or Xuan Truong district?
We are still missing them all and we also miss Trung Linh, our familiar school when we were very young.
Don’t you remember Tet festival, the time for peach flowers to bloom and for our villagers to celebrate Tet?
Don’t you remember the summer nights which are bright with the moonlight around the river embankment?
The children are together, singing and amusing themselves.
Is the flow of Ninh Co River still the same or changed?
Is its water still carrying alluvium to the rice fields?
Don’t you remember the sounds of the cathedral bells which urge the parishioners to go to the evening prayers?
It’s also the time for dinner cooking, so we can see some curly white smoke over the kitchen roof of our neighbors!
When the crops are coming, there are many sailboats carrying tons and tons of paddy to our villages.
There are also some sailboats for pottery, hats and raincoats, and water melons.
These products are selling at the markets where villagers crowd from dawn to dusk.
Don’t you remember the concrete roads and the muddy, slippery roads when it rains?
There are also ponds for celery and “muong” (ong choi) and fields for three-month rice plants.
And after the main harvest, we have to restore the quality of the soil by drying it under the heat of the sunshine.
Don’t you remember the hot summers when we have some religious and non-religious celebrations?
There are many drums, bells, and gongs. They are sounding with its loud, resonant tones.
The parishioners carry the statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary on a palanquin around the village roads. They also do the same with the statue of Saint Dominic.
We love and miss the souvenirs of our native villages when we were very young.
For over fifty years, we have experienced many ups and downs in our lives,
Nevertheless I still miss the Ninh Co River at that time and for ever.
